We have assembled our favourite links, tools and trip recommendations for you before you begin your journey in and around Mexico. Beyond the obvious (know your route and get your maps in order, update the GPS, etc.), here are a few things you may not have considered.
Mexico has an extensive and well-maintained system of toll highways. As the toll highways are privatized and on the user pay system, they can often be costly. This tool can help you know exactly what route to take, how many kilometres the trip will be, how much the tolls will cost in pesos and how long it should take to get to your destination. There is an example of the output at the end of this post. There is even a version to estimate the fuel cost in pesos. An example of that is also posted below.
A few tips to prepare for your journey:
- Take a compass with you
- When in doubt, ask a taxi driver for directions or ask a taxi to guide you to your destination and pay the driver for the guidance
- Take notarized copies of your important documents with you and leave the originals in a safe place or leave the notarized copies in a safe place if you must carry an original (notarized by a Mexican notary public)
- If you have cell phone service on a plan in Mexico you may well have roadside assistance coverage, you may also if you have a foreign or Mexican recent model car or automobile association membership
- Remember to have your cell phone charged and your credit topped up if a pre-paid phone
- Mexican emergency number is 066
- The Angeles Verdes (Green Angels) are a great resource when you are stuck on a highway, dial 078 for assistance
